Top athletes honoured
Simon Yip and Lisa Hurst reigned supreme at the 41st annual Varsity Athletic Awards Banquet Thursday night, taking home the Male and Female Athlete of the Year accolades handed out at the Progress campus.
A leading member of the Men’s badminton team member, Yip offered some reflection on how he felt the season went for the team following the night’s ceremony.
“Overall the season went pretty good,” Yip said. “We wanted to repeat our title, last year being provincial champions, but we came second.”
“We still went to nationals, and we ended up being fifth in Canada, so that’s not bad.
Hopefully next year we can bring back a bronze medal or better.”
Yip will be back for his final year with the team in the fall.
On the women’s side of varsity athletics, Hurst earned top spot thanks to her contribution to the Women’s outdoor and indoor soccer teams.
“I’m graduating this year, so it’s definitely good to go out on top so to speak,” Hurst said.
