Centennial loses a close game at home to Fleming
In the final seconds of the last basketball game at the DEL Gym, the Colts lost to the Knights after missing a buzzer-beating shot.
Even though Fleming was unable to contain Roderick Robinson, who scored a game-high 37 points, their steady three-point shooting kept them in the game.
The Knights pushed their lead to 91-89 with two free throws after a controversial foul call in the final seconds of the game.
“We were ready for them, we prepared for them, and we were right down to the last second and the referee had to take the game into his own hands,” said Ro Russell, the Colt’s head coach. “It’s hard to say that, and if I get fined for it I don’t care.”
It was a close game from beginning to end. Centennial trailed by only two points by halftime, but came out strong to start the second half and even led 58-50 at one point.
A three-pointer by Fleming with just over a minute left stretched the margin to 89-85, their largest lead of the half.
“If we were at full strength we would have won that game,” said Russell.
Starter and key contributor, Marlon MacLean, struggled to stay on the floor after getting into foul trouble early. The team has also lost a number of players because of eligibility issues.
Times are tough for the 5-13 Colt’s as they will now lose home court advantage for the remainder of the season due to the closure of the DEL.
