Career coach gives new job advice

It’s that time of the year again. February is job-hunting season for many students and grads looking for internships or their first real jobs after graduation. Jill Andrew is an award winning journalist and former career /education columnist with Metro News She shared a few tips and advice on making a good impression at a new job.

Q: What is the best work ethic for students going into their first paid job and/or internship?

“Go into the position ready and eager to put in a little extra when necessary. As an entry level employee or  a student on an internship you are consistently proving yourself and in many cases if you can rise to the occasion you will get noticed by senior staff.”

Q: What should students look for in potential employers?

“First thing…do your research. Get their feedback on the type of employer/company it is.  A scattered employer isn’t going to be a good mentor–especially if this is an internship position. You need someone who has time to show you the ropes–at least at the onset.”

Q:How can students or grads prepare for a great first job experience?

“Employers are usually looking for someone with loads of energy, creativity, but also someone with superior listening skills who can perform tasks within deadlines.

It’s also about having superior inter-personal and communications skills.

Sharp, clean, modern professional appearance. Personal hygiene is a must. You don’t have to be a millionaire to look like a million bucks…always present your best professional image!”

Jill Andrew speaks on topics related to careers, marketing yourself and self-esteem, and  provides consulting services to graduates.
